General notes on public transportation

You should buy a ticket prior to entering a bus or tram – ticket machines are very rare in buses or trams. The best places for buying tickets are small newspaper shops. On weekends you may buy a single ticket from the driver – however, the driver does not return any change.

You are allowed to change lines within the time of ticket validity, i.e. since punching a ticket inside a tram or a bus. If you change lines, you should only punch the ticket once – in the first bus or tram.

About Szczecin

photo: Wikipedia

Szczecin is the 7th largest city in Poland. It is located in northwestern part of Poland at the Oder River and along the Dąbie Lake. Its port has been playing important role for several ages. Strategic location on the commercial route caused that the city has been in possession of various countries, such as Germany, Sweden and, even, France.

Turbulent past, beautiful historic buildings and monuments and lots of green attracts many tourists from foreign countries. One of the most representative monumental places is Wały Chrobrego – a set of historic buildings (Maritime Museum, Modern Theatre, Maritime University, Province Office) and a walking route with coffee houses. The second important historic building is the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle. Besides, there are many other historic buildings, especially sacral, with gothic St. Joseph’s Basilica in the city centre.

The city architectural plan resembles Paris because the downtown is also built with star-shaped roundabouts and green avenues. The most representative walking avenue spans from so called Fountain Avenue through Grunwald Square to Kasprowicz’ Park, where outdoor events often take place. Szczecin established a Floating Garden 2050 Project focused on city development and promotion. This project is advertized with the hot air balloon, which is an interesting tourist attraction.

Although Szczecin is not located directly at the seaside, it has convenient link with the Baltic Sea. An interesting and convenient way to get to the seaside is to take a hydrofoil. The journey to Świnoujście takes over an hour from the harbor close to Wały Chrobrego.
