Abstract
The talk will discuss some recent history and current trends around analytic relational technologies. Topics to be briefly covered include: Columnar Analytic Databases, SQL on Hadoop, cloud centric deployments and problems of scale. The talk will also discuss approximate query processing as one of the main approaches to dealing with scale.
Short Bio
Rick has been working in the database industry for over 20 years. He's worked to build some of the largest deployed "Data Warehouses" in the World. He spent 17 years with Teradata where most recently he served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Teradata’s Database Engineering group, where he was responsible for product direction and vision. In that position, Glick focused on data loading, manageability, extensibility, and performance initiatives. His Teradata career spans back to 1991 when he was one of Teradata’s first professional services employees hired to work on the noted Wal-Mart account in Bentonville, Arkansas. After Teradata Rick was the Vice President of Technology and Architecture for ParAccell a Columnar MPP database that provides the database technology behind Amazon's Redshift database. Most recently Rick is working with Infobright working on parallel processing and approximate query techniques. Rick has a BS in Computer Science from Iowa State University.
